The stunning UK vote to leave the European Union has cast a shadow over the short-term outlook for economic and IT market growth in Western Europe, triggering a period of uncertainty which is set to cast a shadow over business and consumer confidence in the coming months. The global implications are broad: exporters in Japan, investors in the US, policy makers in China, and businesses in Brazil all stand to potentially be affected in different ways. Economists are scrambling to understand what impact, if any, Brexit will have on GDP growth in every country around the world. The outlook for IT spending is similarly volatile, with a range of possible scenarios depending on the length and outcome of UK/EU negotiations, and whether or not a fragile global economy is subjected to additional wild cards and shocks to the system in the second half of 2016. With lingering weakness in China, emerging markets, and oil-exporting economies, the IT market could be set for a period of contingency planning and an increased focus on solutions which offer rapid ROI and minimal risk.

In this IDC Web conference, Stephen Minton will review the latest IT spending data and leading economic indicators for IT buyer behavior, alongside updated market sizing and forecasts from the IDC Worldwide Black Book and Semiannual IT Spending Guide, answering questions such as:

  • What will be the impact of Brexit on the short-term outlook for IT Spending?
  • If there is an economic slowdown in the next 18 months, what effect will this have on technology spending and IT budget planning?
  • Which countries have performed strongly in the first half of 2016, and which are most vulnerable to a potential economic slowdown?
  • Which vertical industries are likely to be most impacted by the current economic volatility?
  • What is the new outlook for IT spending in the UK and Western Europe, and what are some scenarios for the impact on other regions?

Session Speakers:

  • Stephen Minton, Vice President, IDC Customer Insights & Analysis
