After a sluggish year for IT spending in 2016, hopes were high that economic momentum would lay the foundation for significant increases in tech markets this year. The PC market appears to have bottomed out and is regaining its footing amidst demand for new form factors; commercial and professional tablet sales are beginning to make up for long consumer upgrade cycles; and 2017 is expected to bring a significant upgrade cycle for smartphones, including flagship devices. Enterprise spending on infrastructure is likely to strengthen alongside key product cycles in the next 18 months, while cloud datacenter buildout will drive a rebound in server and storage markets. Meanwhile, IT services shows signs of improved project-oriented spending in some regions, and new technologies such as the Internet of Things, cognitive computing and artificial intelligence, and augmented and virtual reality are providing new opportunities. And yet, surveys continue to indicate elevated levels of caution and contingency planning on the part of IT buyers who find themselves working with overall budget increases that are still moderate by historical standards. The shift toward "IT as a Service" continues, as end users leverage the associated cost savings and reduced exposure to risk. For IT vendors, this continues to disrupt traditional revenue streams while creating opportunities for new challengers to move into adjacent markets.

In this IDC Web conference, Stephen Minton will review the latest IT spending data and leading economic indicators for IT buyer behavior, alongside updated market sizing and forecasts from the IDC Worldwide Black Book and Semiannual IT Spending Guide by Industry and Company Size, answering questions such as:

  • What impact will economic and political factors have on the IT industry in the second half of 2017?
  • Which emerging markets are rebounding this year, and which developing countries will provide the next wave of growth?
  • Where are businesses targeting their tech budgets in 2017, and how much IT spending is shifting to the service provider/opex model?
  • Which new technologies are seeing the strongest adoption levels, and how much IT spending is moving to new platforms such as IoT?
  • How much IT spending will be driven by the 3rd Platform, and what impact will this have on traditional 2nd Platform revenue streams?
