By: Nobuko IisakaResearch Manager, Software & Security, IDC Japan, Takashi ManabeGroup Director, Software & Security / IT Spending, IDC Japan

Abstract

This study presents the Japan artificial intelligence (AI) systems market performance in 2018 and the market forecast based on end-user spending from 2019 to 2023. This market doubled in size in 2018, as innovations in internal environment by means of enterprise DX are realized and applications from proof of concept (POC) to actual systems are widely deployed. This market expansion is also contributed by the increased predefining AI functions in applications. IDC predicts that the market will continue to grow in 2019 and later. In the said period, the market will expand as continuous DX is achieved by businesses actually engaging in innovating their external environments. Meanwhile, businesses implementing fragmentary POC that is not associated with business strategies and the critical shortage of AI personnel among IT suppliers and enterprise users will inhibit growth in this market. "It will be critical for IT suppliers to be able to propose to their customers various choices, for example, consultations that allow businesses to design business models with digital at their core, which enable them to engage in external environment innovation and achieve continuous DX, as well as flexible AI system environments and services," says Nobuko Iisaka, research manager, Software and Security, IDC Japan.
