Tomoaki Nakamura

Vice President, IDC Japan Research

Tomoaki Nakamura has more than 25 years of experience in various systems including operating systems, embedded systems, semi-conductor systems, computer control systems, storage systems and automotive infotainment systems. Tomoaki is responsible for all research activities in Japan. He also leads product management team there.

Before joining IDC, He served as CTO of HCX corporation, subsidiary of Hitachi and Clarion, where he lead the development of car infotainment system hardware and software platform. Before HCX, he lead the go to market activities for Storage Management Software in Hitachi Data Systems, Santa Clara as SVP of business development.

Prior to Clarion and Hitachi Data Systems, Tomoaki started his IT career as a real-time UNIX OS designer at Hitachi. His team released the first commercial UNIX workstation into Japan market in as early as 1981. He continued to expand his coverage to all flavors of OSs like HP-UX, AIX, Solaris, Linux, VxWorks and WindowsNT via joint development activities with major IT vendors. He got the award of excellence from IBM, Austin for his contribution to IBM Micro Kernel Project there. His highly reliable software platforms have been used in thousands of world-wide systems like power plant control systems in South Africa , transportation control systems in Japan and China, automotive manufacturing systems in Detroit and stock exchange systems in Japan. Not only for server systems, but for client devices like car navigation devices. BMW 7 series is using car navigation LSIs and software of his design.

Tomoaki graduated from Stanford University with a Master's degree in Computer Science. He also holds a Master degree of engineering from University of Tokyo in Nuclear Engineering.
