Dr. Paul Strassmann

Adjunct Research Advisor

Based on his 42 years as a CIO Paul Strassmann has the experience to offer advice on matters of systems reliability and security, his current focus at IDC.

Mr. Strassmann served as the CIO for General Foods, Kraft, Xerox, the Department of Defense and NASA from 1961 through 2003. He currently holds the position as a Distinguished Professor at the George Mason University.

At Xerox Strassmann was responsible for managing the systems development, programming, operations research and communications staffs. He had direct line responsibility for operating the corporate data center and the global network. At the Department of Defense he had enterprise-wide accountability for IT spending of $28 billion/year, with accountability for multi-billion cost reductions. He is the recipient of the Defense Distinguished Services Medal, the highest award for a civilian employee.  At NASA he served as an Acting CIO and received the Exceptional Service Medal. At the George Mason University he teaches a graduate on-line course in Cyber Operations.

Strassmann has published five books on the economics of information system and 21 e-books on information productivity and knowledge capital - two of his registered trademarks. He has written over 400 articles for magazines such as Computerworld, Base Line and SIGNAL.  Clients include AT&T, Citicorp, Digital Equipment, General Electric, General Motors, IBM, ING, SAIC, Shell Oil, Sun Microsystems, Texas Instruments. He also served as Adjunct Professor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Visiting Professor at the Imperial College in London, England.  His public involvement includes presentations to the U.S. Senate, the House of Representatives, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the British House of Commons and the USSR Council of Ministers. Board membership includes the Alinean, InSite One, McCabe Software, Meta Software and Queralt companies.

Strassmann has an honors B.S. engineering degree from Cooper Union, an M.S. degree from the Sloan School at M.I.T. and a PhD (h.c.) from the George Mason University.
