Scott Ottaway

Research Director, DevOps

Dr. Scott Ottaway is Research Director, DevOps at IDC. His responsibilities focus on market analysis, tracking, forecasting and consulting on software development trends related to DevOps. He is interested in DevOps adoption and challenges across at-scale cloud native SaaS and consumer companies, technology startups and Fortune 1000 organizations as each organization type has unique challenges. He focuses on the multiple facets of DevOps including culture, people, tools and processes  Dr. Ottaway tracks adoption of DevOps deployment and lifecycle models and the open-source ecosystem surrounding DevOps through the use of worldwide surveys, in-depth end customer interviews and engagement with vendors of all sizes.

Dr. Ottaway joined IDC in 2017. Prior to IDC, he worked at AWS in business development, at 451 Research covering cloud provider trends, and at Microsoft for 14 years in a variety of positions in the Server and Cloud divisions including engineering, product marketing, and business management. He also spent three years in the WW Sales and Business Development focused on the hosting and hyperscale cloud providers partner channel. Dr. Ottaway was involved in the development, marketing and sales of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012, System Center 2012, Hyper-V and Windows Azure. Dr. Ottaway was the original product manager for PowerShell and responsible for work with a number of standards bodies including DMTF and OVF.  Prior to Microsoft, Dr. Ottaway taught Cognitive Science and Psychology for five years at Western Washington University.

Dr. Ottaway received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Magna Cum Laude from Western Washington University, an MS in Psychology with Distinction from University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science and Psychology with Distinction from University of New Mexico. Dr. Ottaway also completed a post-doc at Indiana University.
