Maria Gabriella Cattaneo

Gabriella Cattaneo is the director of the Expertise Centre on Competitiveness and Innovation Policies and Strategies of IDC and IDC Health Insights EMEA. The Expertise Centre, which focuses on the competitiveness and innovation impacts of ICT, provides socio-economic research and consulting services to policy makers and industry leaders engaged in the development of the Information Society in Europe and the world. This includes the development of eHealth (i.e., the application of Information and Communication technologies to the Health sector) as a policy priority of the European Union due to the relevance of public policies and regulation in the health industry.

Ms. Cattaneo has more than 15 years of experience in socio-economic research of the Information Society (i.e., the analysis of the social, macro- and micro-economic, industrial and policy dimensions of ICT markets and the knowledge society), with a specific competence on monitoring, evaluating and benchmarking. She is currently the technical coordinator of the Digital Innovation Forum programme (Forum dell’Innovazione Digitale) in Italy, a networking initiative which includes a workgroup on the development of eHealth in Italy. In 2006, Cattaneo studied the development of eHealth Smartcards in Europe carrying out a comparative evaluation of their implementation. In previous years, she analyzed the long-term impacts of eHealth research projects funded by the EC 5th and 6th IST Research Programmes. She was a partner of the SIBIS (Statistical Indicators Benchmarking the Information Society) project, which developed benchmarking indicators for the diffusion of ICTs in the main vertical markets including Government and Healthcare.

Before joining IDC, Ms. Cattaneo was the international projects coordinator of Databank Consulting, a business unit of Databank spa, which she joined in 1991 as senior consultant. Between 1980 and 1991, she worked as a freelance journalist, then reporter specializing in high technologies business for national economic press publications, including daily Il Sole 24Ore, weekly Il Mondo, and daily Italiaoggi.

Ms. Cattaneo is a graduate in Political Sciences magna cum laude from Milan State University and won the Prize Saint Vincent for her graduation Thesis, The impact of new technologies on the organization of daily newspapers. She is proficient in both the English and French languages.
