2016 IDC FutureScape CIO Agenda Prediction 6: Moving Beyond Perimeter Defenses to Proactive Security

Author: Mike Rosen
Vice President of Research, Strategic Architecture

Abstract

This IDC study, written for senior technology executives, explores the issues raised in the 2016 IDC FutureScape CIO Agenda Prediction 6: "By 2016, 70% of IT organizations will shift their focus to advanced 'contain and control' security and away from a perimeter mentality" (see IDC FutureScape: Worldwide CIO Agenda 2016 Predictions, IDC #259969, November 2015). Driving this prediction is the realization that 3rd Platform technologies have fundamentally changed the enterprise perimeter. At the same time, the rise in organized crime, state sponsorship, and industrial espionage has injected a highly sophisticated and determined set of adversaries into the threat environment. Enterprises must adopt a security approach that balances protection with containment and control and weighs costs and benefits against risks and vulnerabilities.

"It's time for organizations to reframe their security from the old, reactive threat-oriented model to an advanced, proactive, predictive, and integrity-oriented approach," says Mike Rosen, vice president of research with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP).
