Abstract

This IDC study presents the top 10 predictions for the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things continues to prove its relevance in organizations' digital transformation (DX). Despite the momentum for IoT in recent years, there are still many elements of this vast and complex ecosystem that IT organizations need to consider as they plan to deploy a solution. The IDC FutureScape for Internet of Things in 2017 provides our global team's view on some of the key topics we expect to affect businesses over the next few years. Some of the topics we raise in this year's IDC FutureScape are:

  • Open data platforms and their implications on current IoT deployments
  • Low-power wireless access networks and whether they are an adequate connectivity method
  • Systems integrators and their increasing importance in IoT projects
  • Key industries expected to drive IoT growth

IDC's global team continues to keep a pulse on the Internet of Things. This IDC FutureScape document is our assessment of developing topics that you and your organization should consider as you head into 2017 and beyond.

"Innovative IoT ideas continue to be driven by line-of-business decision makers, but with every IoT project, the IT implications shouldn't be overlooked — even in the early stages of planning," says Carrie MacGillivray, vice president, IoT and Mobility. "This IDC FutureScape draws attention to several of the IT considerations for CIOs and tech buyers in organizations as they digitally transform with IoT solutions."
