This IDC study provides historical data (2013–2017) and a forecast data (2018–2022) for the worldwide and U.S. enterprise storage systems markets. The forecast and historical data focuses on end-user consumption of three categories of enterprise storage systems — external OEM, internal OEM, and "other," which covers cumulative shipments of systems sold directly to customers by original design manufacturers. For each of these categories, IDC has estimated value (end-user spending), terabytes, and price per gigabyte.
"Market developments of past years such as proliferation of cloud services and increasing adoption of software-defined storage solutions, coupled with the growing efficiency of storage resources replacing legacy systems, put significant pressure on the external storage market, which was declining in the past three years and is not expected to grow in the next five years," says Natalya Yezhkova, research director, Storage. "However, the overall storage market remains in a solid shape as service providers continue to increase their IT infrastructure footprint and enterprises explore hybrid/multicloud IT strategies."
