This IDC study captures the findings from two recent IDC surveys that explore and compare the role of the CIO from the standpoint of the IT organization and the line of business (LOB) with regard to leading digital initiatives in today's organizations. The study sheds light on the areas where the LOB and the IT organization lack critical alignment: areas where the CIO should be providing digital strategy leadership, the CIO's role related to digital innovation, and LOB and IT priorities for digital initiatives. This study, written in particular for CIOs, provides critical insight into LOBs' expectations. In short, as business leaders contemplate the challenges of digital transformation, many are looking for CIOs to step into an unprecedented leadership role; for CIOs with the skills, knowledge, and appetite to lead, digital transformation is creating a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"Although many organizations have effective leadership, few leaders have harnessed the full potential of their organizations' ability to produce DX value," says Serge Findling, vice president with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "This study sheds light on 'why'."
