This IDC study is the second annual document in which IDC has included a breakdown of the forecast for license, maintenance, and subscription revenue. The growth trajectory for each of these large categories of revenue remains relatively unchanged from the previous forecast. Customer preference for license type varies by software type, and an overall software market picture does not always capture these nuances. However, the big picture perspective in this study is designed to help the reader understand the rate and magnitude of major industry shifts.
"The trend toward subscription revenue continues to be a dominant force in the software industry," said Amy Konary, program vice president for Software Licensing and Pricing with IDC. "At some point, growth rates for subscription will slow and the decline in license will flatten out. However, with a pent-up demand for subscription-based offerings as well as a keen focus in growing subscription revenue from substantially all of the major players, these events will not occur within the forecast period in this study."
