Abstract

This IDC Market Analysis Perspective highlights the technical computing (high-performance computing [HPC]) market. In the past 15 years, HPC has been one of the fastest-growing global IT markets, surpassing $23 billion in 2015. IDC estimates that 2016 revenue should grow only by about 3–5%, but growth is expected to return to historical averages of about 6–8% in 2017 out to 2020 to reach $33 billion, with about half of that total coming from sales of server systems and the rest from other parts of the HPC ecosystem: storage, middleware, applications, and service. Expansion is being driven by several factors: new petaflops — and exaflops — system announcements from China, EU, India, Japan, the United States, and other countries are generating buzz that may transfer to the commercial sector, big data combined with HPC is rapidly creating new solutions — and markets — within the HPC space, and HPC-based cybersecurity is a new hot topic.
