Creating Agile Mining: Vendor-Led Innovation in the Mining Sector

By: Emilie DittonAVP, Energy Insights and Manufacturing Insights

On-line Presentation

In this IDC Presentation, IDC Energy Insights presents examples of innovation that key vendors are delivering to their mining customers. Examples of innovation being delivered to mining customers were provided by:

  • SAP
  • Infosys
  • Accenture
  • Schneider Electric
  • Cisco
  • Wipro
  • Tata Consultancy Services

The presentation organizes the examples that have been provided by the aforementioned vendors according to the key relevant predictions published in IDC Energy Insights' report of mining sector predictions published in November 2016 (IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Mining 2017 Predictions, IDC #US40127516, November 2016). The predictions that are included in this presentation are:

  • Agile Mining: Prediction 1. By 2017, 20% of miners will achieve operational excellence through the manufacturisation of mining, implementation of Lean approaches, and standardization of enterprise resource planning (ERP) and operational software integration.
  • Building a Digital Core: Prediction 4. By 2020, every leading miner will have implemented an integrated digital core across enterprise and operations.
  • Getting the Foundations Right: Prediction 10. In 2017, investments in mobile connectivity, security, and cloud by 70% of mining companies will lay the foundation for the digital mine.

IDC Worldwide Energy Insights Research Director Emilie Ditton notes, "Mining companies are at the beginning of a transformation to create agile and resilient operations within an interconnected value chain, creating the ability for far greater responsiveness and control." Furthermore, Ditton observes, "Companies are faced with challenging operating environments and sustained lower-level commodity prices. As a result, available technology choices are creating the opportunity to reshape and integrate value chains through enabling data at scale across the business and to move beyond the siloed approach that has typified the use of data by mining companies."
