The "Four Forces" Driving Distributed Ledger Technology Innovation in Retail Supply Chains

Authors: Victoria Brown, Bill Fearnley

Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses what we have identified as the "four forces" driving distributed ledger technology (DLT) and smart contract innovation within retail supply chains. These "four forces" are:

  • Retailers, wholesalers, and suppliers
  • Technology vendors and service providers
  • Regulators, agencies, and governments
  • Industry collaborations and consortiums

We believe that retailers will greatly benefit from these technologies and should be actively investing in DLT and smart contract proof of concepts and pilot projects. In this IDC Perspective, we discuss multiple opportunities and challenges for retailers.

"There is an increasing call for customer centricity in the face of declining margins, compressing product development cycles, and growing revenue. An integral part of this digital transformation involves exploring new technologies that can simplify business processes while improving profitability and delivering a better customer experience." — Victoria Brown, senior research analyst, IDC Retail Insights
