This IDC study introduces practices for executing digital transformation (DX) through working with external service and outsource providers. This study helps chief procurement officers and CIOs to understand the difference and distinguish between the reliable, efficient outsourcing providers who support a myriad of enterprise systems and processes and the nimble and innovative digital strategists who help organizations develop and execute their digital transformation strategy. Both types of external providers are required. However, their roles and capabilities are quite different, and they must be managed differently to attain the best value from their services. By implementing these practices, organizations will be able to leverage traditional outsourcing services to maintain ongoing legacy systems and to leverage a network of DX providers to develop and execute a digital transformation strategy.
"Digital transformation cannot be accomplished alone for most organizations. The ability to manage a new breed of digital vendors will distinguish winners from 'also-rans' in the digital transformation race," says Dr. Ron Babin, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Program (IEP).
