This IDC study presents the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure taxonomy as it relates to the networking, compute, and storage markets further clarifying IDC's definition of IoT infrastructure deployment model and identifies new segments based on present and future functional roles. This is the first time IDC has published a formal taxonomy defining the scope of the IoT infrastructure market with inputs from worldwide IDC analysts across the networking, compute, and storage industry.

According to Sathya Atreyam, research manager, Mobile and IoT Infrastructure, "IoT is enabling organizations to reinvent their engagement with the customers. It is helping them accelerate the speed at which they deliver their products and services as well as reinvent existing industry processes. Consequently, IDC continues to identify and clarify the most important infrastructure categories across three key segments of networking, cloud, and storage."
