Abstract

This IDC Survey provides an overview of the results from a U.S. survey of enterprises involving their use of managed IoT services. The Survey involved 401 respondents from U.S. firms with 500+ employees. This Survey offers insight into how enterprises want to consume managed Internet of Things (IoT) services with a focus on the status of enterprises regarding available budget for IoT, refresh cycles of IoT-enabled devices, penetration rate of IoT, usage rates for managed IoT services including volume of managed IoT devices, and asset focus of managed IoT for commercial and consumer environments. This Survey additionally looks at managed services requirements involving bundling IT with IoT, operational services, analytics preferences, financial priorities involving IoT asset ownership, preferences in payment methodologies for managed IoT services, and provider preferences for these services.

This Survey also provides IDC's essential guidance for service providers looking to compete effectively in the world of managed IoT services. Key areas of advice include branding managed services as technology agnostic, offering a full portfolio of services, building partner ecosystems, and focusing on general and utilitylike assets for commercial and consumer (home automaton) needs, respectively.
