This IDC Survey Spotlight examines the responses to a question regarding impediments to the migration of production databases to the cloud. IDC surveyed 501 respondents in the first half of 2017, a quarter of whom indicated that the migration process had been delayed. That quarter, 109 respondents were asked the question, "What are the biggest reasons for the database migration to the cloud not proceeding as planned?" This document presents respondents' answers and a breakdown of the response with analysis. "It seems clear that for many large enterprises, more careful planning, talent recruitment, and realistic expectations regarding the scope of the project are critical to success," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software research at IDC. "Clearly, enterprises planning to move databases to the cloud need to budget realistically, employ knowledgeable professionals, expect hiccups, and see this as a process requiring many years to complete."
