3D Printing Survey: Acquisition Process

Author: Keith Kmetz Program Vice President, Imaging, Printing & Document Solutions
On-line Presentation

This IDC Survey analyzes the responses to the acquisition process for 3D printers. This Survey, which was administered in late 2016, covered a number of critical 3D printer market issues with a qualified manufacturing user base. IDC will publish several analyses on the issues raised in this Survey.

The data is segmented by company size (small 1–99 employees, medium-sized 100-499 employees, large 500–999 employees, and very large 1,000+ employees) as well as by manufacturing subsegments like aerospace and defense, automotive, farming/construction and industrial machinery, chemical/petroleum refining and metals/mining, computers/telecom/semiconductors, contract manufacturing, electronic components (not semiconductors), household products (including health/beauty, footwear and apparel, food and beverage, and toys and sporting goods), consumer durables/electronics, and pulp and paper.

With this segmentation in mind, we examine the following issues in this analysis.

  • 3D printer acquisition plans over the next 12 months
  • Preferred channels
  • Purchasing versus leasing
  • Time frame for related software and services acquisitions
  • Sources of information for decision making
