Can Drone Delivery Be the Answer to Last-Mile Fulfillment?

Authors: John Santagate, Victoria Brown
Abstract

This IDC Perspective takes a look at the opportunity and risk associated with drone-based delivery and how drone-based delivery can potentially transform last-mile delivery. Drones are one of the hottest technologies today, and they span both recreational and commercial applications. Within the broad range of drone interest, the use of drones for deliveries is one of the most transformative and visible applications and, as such, has companies like Amazon, UPS, Google, and even 7-Eleven making significant investment in drone delivery projects.

John Santagate, research manager at IDC, says, "Drones open up an opportunity to vastly improve one of the longest-running supply chain challenges, last-mile fulfillment. Companies have been looking to automate as many processes as possible, and while drones will not fully automate the delivery process, they provide the possibility of augmenting human delivery and driving efficiency, speed, and cost savings into the fulfillment process."
