Worldwide Smartphone Market Shares, 2016: Crisis and Recovery

Authors: Anthony Scarsella, William Stofega
Abstract

This IDC study provides an analysis of vendor performance in the worldwide smartphone market in 2016. From a regional standpoint, mature markets like the United States, China, and Western Europe all hit single-digit growth in 2016, while high-growth markets, such as India, Indonesia, the Middle East, and Africa, and other pockets in Southeast Asia, all remained healthy. Still, despite some promising innovations, we have not seen anything that will help return the market to a 6-8% growth rate.

"After a lackluster year, we believe that we are on the verge of revolutionary innovation that will help drive growth in a market that has been saturated by undifferentiated devices," said William Stofega, program director with IDC's Mobile Phones team.
