This IDC study is the first in a three-part special report entitled OpenStack Infrastructure Ecosystem: Adoption Patterns, Use Cases, and Market Outlook. This first document in the series includes IDC's analysis and opinions on the state of OpenStack adoption and use in 2017 and the challenges that exist to broader OpenStack deployment. This document is supplemented with insights from OpenStack users based on IDC research and end-user discussions over the past several years.
"OpenStack as a community and an open source cloud framework has continued to gain acceptance and maturity among enterprises, service providers, research organizations, and internet companies. This interest speaks to the goals cloud operators have in reducing cost, increasing efficiency, and better aligning infrastructure capabilities with new business objectives," said Laura DuBois, group vice president at IDC. "Deployment of an OpenStack cloud often comes with an understanding that cloud is the underlying platform for innovation. This innovation coming in the form of new applications is being developed by DevOps or line-of-business organizations."
