2018 U.S. SMB Telephony Update: IP Telephony, Hosted VoIP, UC, and Telecom Equipment Ownership/Acquisition Plans

By: Raymond Boggs

On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Survey presentation compares SBs (firms with under 100 employees) and MBs (firms with 100–999 employees) regarding current use and plans to acquire different on-premises and hosted telephone systems. The importance of video collaboration/videoconferencing as an IT spending priority is examined first, as compared with other technology areas. Current use and future plans of larger firms, with 1,000–4,999 employees, are also examined.

The use of VoIP solutions by SMBs in different size categories is presented as is the use of hosted telecom solutions, including the use of hosted or combined hosted and on-premises solutions. The share of SBs and MBs using six different unified communications (UC) solutions are compared: unified messaging, shared calendars, shared contacts/address books, instant messaging, presence, and mobile UC. The Survey presentation concludes with an assessment of SB and MB current use and future plans for different advanced videoconferencing and support services (e.g., video — cable TV for waiting rooms, videoconferencing for conference rooms, telepresence — higher-quality AV for conference rooms not PC based, collaboration/communications services — e.g., Webex, service/maintenance for voice and data equipment).

The results are drawn from IDC's U.S. SMB Survey conducted in 1Q18, with 820 SMB respondents as well as 80 firms with 1,000–4,999 employees.
