Worldwide Carrier Routing Equipment Forecast, 2017–2021

Authors: Rajesh Ghai, Petr Jirovsky
Abstract

This IDC study presents the worldwide market forecast for carrier routing network equipment for 2016– 2021. Carrier routing network equipment sales to service providers (SPs) are forecast to grow from $10.99 billion in 2016 to $11.94 billion by the end of 2021, for a CAGR of 1.7%.

"After two years of strong growth driven by mobile network buildouts in Asia/Pacific, we expect the core market to moderate in 2017 and expect it to pick up ahead of the 5G rollout in the 2019 and beyond time frame. On the other hand, the strategic imperative for greater service agility and network flexibility in a dynamic demand environment is pushing carriers to transform their network edge and could pause spending on traditional WAN connectivity use cases such as MPLS VPN. IDC expects this transformation to keep the edge segment sluggish in the near term but expects the segment to resume healthy growth in 2018 spurred by cloud gateway and broadband gateway use cases." — Rajesh Ghai, research director, Carrier Network Infrastructure
