Worldwide Data Protection and Recovery Software Market Shares, 2017: Slower Growth

By: Phil GoodwinResearch Director, Storage Systems and Software, Andrew SmithSr. Research Analyst, Storage Software

Abstract

This IDC study examines the worldwide data protection and recovery (DP&R) software market in calendar year 2017. The data protection and recovery software market revenue growth slowed significantly in 2017 compared with 2016, largely because of Dell's disappointing year. Veeam continued to generate enviable growth, and Commvault also posted strong results. Moreover, the smaller vendors in the market collectively grew 14.5% y/y, a growth rate eclipsed only by Veeam (26.6% y/y). Dell yielded its number 2 market position to IBM, while Veritas stayed in the number 1 market position despite a 4% drop in revenue. We don't expect to see Dell have another year like 2017, but we do expect small and emerging vendors to enjoy continued success in 2018 as these smaller vendors pursue "best in class" market niches. Although 2017 was not a banner year for DP&R software, we expect continued growth that makes DP&R a bright spot in the storage software market.

"The data protection and recovery software market growth slowed considerably in 2017, falling from 6.8% in 2016 to 2.1% in 2017," said Phil Goodwin, research director, IDC's Storage Systems and Software. "Nevertheless, data protection and recovery remains a large, growing market. Smaller and emerging vendors again outpaced the market growth, posting a 14.5% growth rate as a group."
