Platform-Driven Business Models Create Significant Added Value in Enterprise IT Infrastructure

By: Eric BurgenerResearch Vice President, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group

Abstract

This IDC Perspective defines the platform-driven business model that is increasingly in use in the IT industry today, and it provides six key criteria that are necessary for the establishment of a platform-based ecosystem that delivers high value to all its constituents (the platform vendor, developers, partners, and customers). Ecosystem constituents can use these criteria as a guideline for establishing and nurturing the platform ecosystem (the platform vendor), evaluating the business opportunities that can be built around the platform (developers and partners), or gauging the value the platform provides to solve business problems (customers). These criteria are not specific to a single vendor's products and can be used to evaluate different IT infrastructure solutions platforms. This study is written for vendor product managers, strategic planners at developers and partners, and IT infrastructure management at customers.

"As more companies commit to the digital transformation that will be required to successfully compete in today's business world, they will be encountering more platform-driven business models from IT vendors that establish platform ecosystems," said Eric Burgener, research director, Storage. "IDC has established a set of criteria that vendors, developers, partners, and customers can use to evaluate the value that various platform ecosystems can provide to them in meeting their own business goals."
