Abstract

This IDC study is the second in a three-part special study entitled OpenStack Infrastructure Ecosystem: Adoption Patterns, Use Cases, and Market Outlook. This document includes IDC's analysis on OpenStack deployment and user challenges based on in-depth interviews among 10 OpenStack users.

"It's been interesting to see the adoption innovation in the OpenStack community over the past decade as it is used among enterprises building private clouds, software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies, and telecommunications providers embracing software-defined networking. Among those we interviewed, the use of OpenStack will continue to increase based on mixed workload consolidation on OpenStack clouds and the expanding numbers of OpenStack clouds. The objectives with the use of OpenStack stem from lock-in avoidance, automation, cost savings, time to market, and infrastructure standardization. 70% of users indicate that they plan to expand OpenStack use." — Laura DuBois, GVP at IDC's Enterprise Storage, Server, and System Infrastructure Software research
