This IDC study presents an update to the Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Forecast, 2017–2021 (IDC #US42516117, May 2017). This data in this study, both historical and forecast, focuses on the consumption of HDDs used in servers, enterprise storage systems, PELS devices, PCs, video surveillance systems, and consumer electronics products. For each of these categories, HDD unit shipments, petabytes, and revenue are provided.
Underpinning the worldwide HDD forecast are IDC's assumptions regarding HDD technology transitions that will affect the pace of HDD areal density growth, HDD product transitions, and HDD price-per-gigabyte declines for each HDD product segment.
"HDD petabyte shipments in 2017 are lower than expected mostly because of weaker than forecast HDD shipments to cloud service providers. Nevertheless, over the forecast period, the enterprise market will continue to make up a higher percentage of overall HDD industry petabyte shipments and revenue. In addition, growing demand for HDDs used for video surveillance will help to slow the rate of HDD unit shipment declines and will help to offset lower client HDD revenue through 2021." — John Rydning, research vice president, Worldwide Hard Disk Drives
