This IDC Perspective reviews recent research on software-defined storage (SDS), drawing from the fall 2017 edition of the Storage User Demand Study Survey, a File- and Object-Based Storage Survey, July 2017, and other research. SDS adoption by company size is discussed, as are use cases where SDS platforms are replacing other types of storage. We also review and provide commentary on recent research on primary and secondary storage definitions, and how SDS use is split between these types of environments.
"Software-defined storage revenue continues to significantly outgrow enterprise storage revenue, and this trend will only increase across our five-year forecast horizon," said Eric Burgener, research director for Storage at IDC. "In 2017, SDS will drive roughly 13% of overall enterprise storage revenue, but that contribution increases to over 21% by 2021."
