Assessing Options for Datacenter SDN

Author: Brad Casemore
Research Director, Datacenter Networks

Abstract

This IDC Perspective addresses options for enterprise buyers of datacenter SDN.

"If enterprises intend their on-premises datacenters to play a meaningful role in accommodating highly distributed and dynamic cloud-native application environments, they'll have to pursue extensive datacenter infrastructure modernization. In most instances, the datacenter network will be in particularly dire need of radical transformation, both architecturally and operationally. Fortunately, when it comes to overhauling the datacenter network, enterprise IT buyers have a range of viable and robust SDN and IBN options to consider. The option any given organization chooses will depend on several criteria, including application environment, technology preferences, operational practices, infrastructure investments, and available resources and skill sets. Nonetheless, all enterprise IT buyers should ensure that the SDN option they select confers greater simplicity in provisioning and managing network infrastructure, while also imbuing the network with the intelligent automation that will be essential to operational and business agility." —– Brad Casemore, research director, Datacenter Networks, IDC
