Abstract

This IDC Perspective examines the role of open source software (OSS) in IoT application development worldwide as well as a specific view into the European environment. The document provides the reader with the current status of IoT application development, some of the key benefits and challenges of leveraging OSS for IoT application development, an overview of some of the vendors and foundations involved in open source IoT projects, common open source IoT monetization models, and best practices for successful solution deployment.

"While there is strong customer interest in commercial (non–open source) IoT application platforms, leveraging open source technology platforms for IoT application development can offer many benefits, including a reduced potential for vendor lock-in, flexible development/deployment options, and cost savings," says Stacy Crook, research director, IoT.

"In the broader software market, open source software has long been a viable, attractive option. But more recently, we have seen IoT become a key focal point for some of the major foundations that nurture a portfolio of OSS technologies, helping jump-start that market and greatly increasing competitive conditions for non–open source solutions," says Al Gillen, group VP, Software Development and Open Source.
