Government Open Data Platforms: Enabling Citizen Service Improvements

By: Adelaide O'BrienResearch Director, Government Digital Transformation Strategies, Curt SavoieProgram Director

Abstract

This IDC Perspective presents requirements of the Open, Public, Electronic, and Necessary (OPEN) Government Data Act, which mandates that all nonsensitive federal government data be made available in open and machine-readable formats by default. Examples of federal, state, and local open data platforms enabling citizen service improvements are provided.

"From the citizen perspective, open data is a necessary element to be able to be knowledgeable and participatory in civic life," says Adelaide O'Brien, research director, IDC Government Insights.
