Worldwide Software-Defined Compute Software Forecast, 2018–2022: First Look

By: Gary ChenResearch Manager, Software Defined Compute

Abstract

This IDC study provides a preliminary top-down sizing of the software-defined compute software market in 2017 and a 2018–2022 forecast for this market. Historical and forecast revenue data is shown for the total worldwide market, and forecast revenue data is broken out by region and operating environment.

According to Gary Chen, research manager, IDC's Software-Defined Compute, "The software-defined compute market is continuing to evolve as new innovations come to market. Virtual machine software continues to be a foundational technology, but that market is flattening as saturation becomes an issue, along with the increasing trend of virtualization less as a standalone product but rather a piece of a large infrastructure solution. Cloud system software, the foundation for private cloud, is one area that is driving growth in the market, though it remains fairly small as customers grapple with complexity issues. Containers are a very fast-growing technology and will become the base for the next generation of applications and will become a key SDC technology in the coming years."
