This IDC study presents a five-year forecast update for the worldwide wearables market.
"The worldwide wearables market is in a state of transition," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director for IDC's Wearables team. "Basic wearables — along the engine of the overall market — is slowing down as users transition to smart wearables that can run third-party applications. Conversely, we expect double-digit growth for smart wearables. However, from a total volume perspective, basic wearables will account for the majority of shipment volumes throughout our forecast period. For vendors, this means developing and executing their smart wearable strategy, and that there is also space for basic wearables, particularly for emerging products like kids watches and earworn devices."
