Author: Shane Rau
Research Vice President, Computing Semiconductors

Abstract

This IDC study examines the performance of the PC microprocessor market overall and through its desktop PC processor and mobile PC processor segments.

Beginning with our 1Q17 deliverables, IDC separated the coverage of server processors into its own deliverable. Refer to Worldwide Server Microprocessor Market Shares, 3Q17: By Vendor, Architecture, Channel, Socket, and System Category Enterprise OEMs Begin Drawing Significant Volume of New Xeon Processors (IDC #US43519418, January 2018) for the results of the server processor market in 3Q17.

"The 3Q17 PC processor market was relieved by the moderation of shortages of other components such as DRAM and client SSDs," said Shane Rau, research vice president, Computing Semiconductors. "This relief meant that PC system shipments held back in 1H17 could move forward in 2H17."
