Worldwide Virtual Reality Hardware Market Shares, 2017: Samsung Maintains Leadership Despite 39.4% Decline

By: Ramon T. LlamasResearch Director, Mobile Devices and AR/VR, Tom MainelliGroup Vice President, Devices & AR/VR

This IDC study examines the market share of the major vendors in the worldwide virtual reality hardware market in 2017.

"Having enjoyed its watershed moment in 2016 with the launch of major products, the virtual reality market struggled with its first growing pains," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Devices and AR/VR team. "Early adopters drove volumes in 2016 but having filled that wave of interest, demand in 2017 waned, even with price decreases and slightly improved products and experiences. Still, that did not stifle interest and new product launches, as Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality finally launched and news from Oculus and HTC pointed to new products coming in 2018."
