Abstract

The IDC Market Presentation characterizes the global mobile and handheld game console (i.e., Nintendo 3DS/2DS, Sony PlayStation Vita) marketplace in 2017 and places it in a somewhat broader gaming industry context. The Presentation compares smartphone, tablet, and handheld console gaming from several vantage points and notes some key trends — such as the ascendency of games with live player-versus-player (PvP) and co-op gameplay to the top of the global grossing charts.

IDC established a relationship with the mobile app analytics provider App Annie in 2012. App Annie tracks iOS and Google Play downloads, consumer spending, and related metrics in particular depth. Together with IDC's handheld game console coverage and associated surveys, it's possible to create a concise but comprehensive view of portable gaming by major geographic region in 2017, which is the focus of this Presentation.

"There are two key trends from last year that are likely to have legs in 2018: Asia-Pacific's big three markets — China, Japan, and South Korea — continued to grow rapidly while shifting from simply being big aggregate spenders on mobile games to being global powerhouses in the area of game origination and gameplay innovation and live PvP and co-op titles appear to be the hottest new gaming properties on mobile devices."
