Worldwide Mobile Phone Forecast, 2018–2022

By: Anthony ScarsellaResearch Manager, Mobile Phones, William StofegaProgram Director, Mobile Device Technology and Trends

Abstract

This IDC study presents the five-year forecast for mobile phone shipments worldwide by device vendors. The worldwide mobile phone market will reach a total of 1,958.3 million unit shipments in 2018, down 0.6% from the 1,971.0 million units shipped in 2017. From there, total mobile phone shipments will reach 1,940.4 million units worldwide by 2022, resulting in a CAGR of -0.3% from 2017 to 2022.

"2018 is set to bring a slight decline to the total mobile phone market as we expect a continuing decrease in feature phone shipments offset by minor 2.1% growth in smartphones," says Anthony Scarsella, research manager for IDC's Mobile Phones team. "Despite the expected decline in 2018, we expect more premium devices to enter the market. New 18:9 bezel-less models with advanced capabilities such as AR/VR and artificial intelligence will be some of the big trends throughout the year, and they won't come cheap. We expect a 9.0% year-over-year increase in the average selling price of a mobile phone in 2018 largely fueled by these new ultra-high-end models. Prices will continue to grow throughout the forecast period as this segment of the market will thrive in many developed markets where consumers can utilize financing and trade-in to offset the higher up-front cost."
