This IDC study evaluates point-of-sale (POS) software vendors in the department store retail sector. The document examines how point-of-sale software vendors are developing their solutions to respond to the increasing omni-channel commerce pressures that retailers are feeling. As the omni-channel ante goes up — customers expecting better, faster, and easier ways to search, buy, and get delivery of their purchases — retailers are having to deploy current-state point-of-sale solutions that can deliver these capabilities. This IDC Retail Insights' IDC MarketScape assesses the POS software vendor landscape by examining point-of-sale omni-channel capabilities offered by vendors across the categories of technical capabilities, integration, customer (record/engagement), product, transaction management, and fulfillment.
"We have tried to take a different tack from so many other POS research efforts by taking a comprehensive look at the omni-channel commerce capabilities of the point-of-sale software vendor landscape. So rather than do a feature/function comparison, we are focusing on the omni-channel scenarios and other dimensions that the POS software vendors are addressing. This is important as the point-of-sale system continues to be a central component of the retailer-customer interaction and everything that happens along the customer journey," said Robert Eastman, research manager, IDC's Point of Sale (Worldwide Retail Technology Strategies service in IDC Retail Insights). "This research should serve to highlight the vendors with omni-channel commerce-enabled offerings in the department store sector and which vendors are leading in their POS innovation."
