This IDC study provides a five-year forecast of the worldwide refurbished phone market and its expansion and growth by 2022. This study provides an updated market forecast, based upon changes that will impact resellers, OEMs vendors, carriers, and consumers.
"Increased smartphone prices at the high end of the spectrum has led to many consumers holding on to their phones longer than expected, but at the same time, it has raised the average selling price (ASP) of a used device in the secondary market. This trend continues to negatively impact supply for high-end used devices in many markets. However, the increase in low-cost device trade-in will continue to grow as many emerging markets can still utilize these devices. With the average selling price for a used device expected to be $180 in 2022, the total market value for used devices in 2022 will be an estimated $52.7 billion," says Anthony Scarsella, research manager for IDC's Mobile Phone program.
