This IDC Perspective calls attention to unintended obstacles to agility that are frequently found in traditional, non-digital-native companies. Existing structures that reward local success while sacrificing end-to-end agility, resistance to changing familiar approaches that are now obstructing agility, and flawed attempts at enterprise transformation by focusing only on technology rather than the entire enterprise are obstacles that must be overcome.
"Most enterprise executives are unaware of the obstacles to agility that are caused by their traditional structures and processes," says Susan Martin, adjunct research advisor with IDC's Research Network. "CIOs must provide leadership to obtain executive buy-in for transforming not just IT but their entire organization and to mentor the entire organization on what they must do to achieve that transformation."
