Retooling Consulting Capabilities — Key Findings from 2017 Payer Survey of Healthcare IT Consultants/Systems Integrators

By: Jeff RivkinResearch Director, Payer IT Strategies

Abstract

This IDC Perspective describes the status and drivers of change in the investments that IT consultants are making in their capabilities to serve payers. This document compares the results of surveys completed in 2015 and 2017 that represent the past, current, and future investment intentions of the largest IT consulting firms that serve healthcare organizations in the United States. Our analysis sheds light on what IT consultants think payers will demand and how that demand will change considering legislative, industry, and technology drivers.

The survey findings described in this document provide an excellent foundation for better decision making by the IT consultants and the buyers of IT consulting as they adapt to this tumultuous industry.

"IT consultants and systems integrators are retooling their specializations, pricing, and offerings, particularly for health plans," says Jeff Rivkin, research manager for Payer IT Strategies at IDC Health Insights. "There is mounting demand for consulting skills related to robotics, business analytics, consumer/patient engagement, back office, and cloud."
