On-Premise Consumption-Based Computing
Abstract
This IDC Perspective looks at new consumption-based offerings from three vendors: HPE, Dell EMC, and Oracle. As customers become more comfortable with new IT consumption models, IDC expects the demand for as-a-service or utility-based computing to move to the enterprise datacenter. The concept of utility-based computing has been discussed for years, often with different definitions and mixed levels of success.
"A perfect utility-based model would be the equivalent of how consumers view their electric or heating service provider — you pay only for what you use, with monthly or quarterly billing that offers guaranteed service levels and predetermined pricing," said Rob Brothers, program vice president, Software and Hardware Support and Deployment Services.
