Abstract

This IDC study presents a five-year forecast for the worldwide endpoint security market as of June 2018, using estimates of market actuals from calendar year 2017. This study updates the previous forecast published in Worldwide Endpoint Security Forecast, 2016–2020 (IDC #US41825816, October 2016). In this document, and moving forward, the IDC Security team uses the moniker of corporate to represent products to be consumed by commercial entities of all sizes and not-for-profit organizations. Historically, the term enterprise was used by the IDC Security team to represent this segment. As IDC looks to continue to innovate its coverage of endpoint security, the IDC security team will increasingly look at analysis by size of business. In that context, the term enterprise will be used to represent organizations with 10,000 or more employees, congruent with the definition from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

"As the network perimeter fragments and the internet is darkened by encryption, the endpoint becomes the penultimate control point for the implementation of device, application, and data security. However, endpoints, by their very nature, create a special challenge as decentralization is not the friend of security. Specialized and sophisticated tools thus become mainstream; vendors with innovative offerings and segment-appropriate channel strategies are capitalizing," explains Frank Dickson, research vice president, IDC Security Products and Identity and Access Management research practices.
