Wearables and Bring-Your-Own-Device Policies

By: Ramon T. LlamasResearch Director, Mobile Devices and AR/VR

On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Survey examines the current state of wearables and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies. More specifically, it examines if companies are including wearables in BYOD alongside other smart compute devices, how often those policies are reviewed, employee participation, and expectations around future employee participation. In addition, we provide breakdowns by company size.

"As long as employees connect their wearables to the enterprise, there will be a need for a clear and flexible BYOD policy," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Mobile Devices team. "Wearables got their start mostly as consumer devices, but eventually, they find their way into the enterprise as extensions of the smartphone to receive and send messages. And soon enough, more enterprise-grade applications will become available for wearables. Before all this happens, companies need to revisit their BYOD policies to encompass wearables."
