This IDC TechBrief is an overview of residential demand response programs and describes the benefits of such programs to both utilities and their customers. Some of the primary objectives of residential demand response programs are aimed at creating utility power system reliability and increasing customer engagement and satisfaction while lowering costs for both the utility and its customers.
According to John Villali, research director for IDC Energy Insights, "Demand-side management programs have been in existence for many years but have mostly been geared toward commercial and industrial customers. However, demand response programs have increased in recent years at the residential level with an emphasis on customer engagement and reduction of electric load at the home. Customer satisfaction and aligning customer values around clean energy, sustainability, and customer choice are increasing interest and participation in residential DR programs."
