This IDC study presents a five-year forecast update for the worldwide wearables market.
"The future of the worldwide wearables market is heading for slow but certain growth," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director for IDC's Wearables team. "We expect the market to slow down to double-digit growth in 2018 because of cooling demand for first basic wearables and the market's growing appetite for multipurpose smart wearables. This does not mean that basic wearables will disappear altogether; in fact, we believe that they will likewise evolve and offer best-of-breed experiences far apart and ahead of the copycat and me-too devices. Smart wearables, meanwhile, will take slow steps away from their tethered relationship smartphones and move toward standalone status and increasingly gain greater salience in the market."
