This IDC Survey Spotlight looks at channels preferences when it comes to purchasing wearable devices based upon the IDC 2018 U.S. Commercial Mobile Device Survey. "Wearable devices" include fitness trackers and smartwatches but exclude augmented and virtual reality devices.
"As wearables slowly make their way into the enterprise, companies will look to different channels to procure them," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Wearables team. "According to this survey, value-added resellers (VARs) and direct vendor sales have a slight lead compared with consumer- and business-focused online and brick-and-mortar channels. We believe that this is due to customer needs, whether it be for full provisioning and setup in which a VAR or a direct sales channel can assist or if it is for order fulfillment, and cost and speed of delivery are important. Wearable device OEMs should consider which channels to develop further as these devices take stronger hold within the enterprise."
