IDC MaturityScape Benchmark: Curated Merchandise Orchestration in the United States, 2019

By: Greg GirardProgram Director, Worldwide Omni-Channel Retail Analytics Strategies

Abstract

This IDC study should be read in conjunction with IDC MaturityScape: Curated Merchandise Orchestration 1.0 (IDC #US43293616, December 2017). Together, they provide a comprehensive overview of CMO maturity in five dimensions — vision, process, technology, data, and analytics — and enables retailers to:

  • Assess their current retail planning competency and maturity
  • Foster a dialog among business and technology executives on related goals and actions
  • Create a baseline for short-term and long-term planning for all dimensions of retail planning

"Traditional retail planning has run its course, overstaying its welcome," said Greg Girard, program director for Intelligent Product Merchandising and Marketing Strategies. "Retailers need to think digital first. Most are struggling with this. They have gone digital around the edges, but now there are no more edges, and they must flip the planning process and culture to a digital mindset. Curation speaks to designing, buying, assorting, and localizing. Orchestration speaks simultaneous planning and execution for continuous rebalancing of network inventory, the digital and physical space, and demand creation. CMO is the central nervous system of enterprise and ecosystem signals that harmonize its own and adjacent processes from design to deliver."
